About the University of the West of Scotland

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is a public academic and research university in Scotland, UK. It was established in 1897, became a university in 1992 and was formerly called the University of Paisley.

The University of the West of Scotland ranks topmost among the Young Universities in Scotland and is still the largest new university in Scotland. The University of the West of Scotland  is renowned for its industry research and holds 2nd ranking in Scotland for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with companies. Their courses are vocational and often come with options to work in the industry for 1 year. The University has also bagged a 2nd rank for Education in the UK by the Complete University Guide (2020). It is a popular university for students seeking world-class education in Scotland.

The University of the West of Scotland has four contemporary and large campuses spread across West and Southwest Scotland and one in London. ‘Ayr’ campus houses nursing and business schools. The Blantyre (Lanarkshire) campus is located in the Hamilton International Technology Park which opened in 2018. The Dumfries campus is called the Crichton University Campus and offers courses in business, computing and nursing. The Paisley campus is the oldest and largest UWS site.  The London campus serves as an educational centre for international students at UWS in London.

The university has 4 Schools: the Schools of Business and Creative Industries; School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences; School of Education and Social Sciences and School of Health and Life Sciences. UWS conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, research courses and CPD courses. It caters to over 17000 national and international students.

Campus and facilities at the University of the West of Scotland

The University of the West of Scotland campuses are located at Paisley, Ayr, Lanarkshire and Dumfries. The London campus is situated at the city centre, near the London Docklands.  All campuses commonly feature modern lecture halls and classrooms, custom studio spaces, high-tech laboratories, sports facilities, special centres for certain disciplines, shops, cafes, diners, student lounges and libraries.

The Paisley campus the largest, spread over 20 acres, with all the latest amenities. It caters to around 10000 students and offers most of the courses. The Ayr campus is located at the Craigie Estate near the River Ayr. The Library at Ayr has won awards for its design and collection. The campus additionally has recording facilities, a radio station, a stylish fitness suite and sports centre. The Lanarkshire campus is recently renovated and driven completely by renewable energy. It has 3 campus buildings which are connected by The Street – a common social activity area. The Dumfries campus is the smallest and comprises of five historic buildings.

The London campus is a modern building featuring a grand atrium, large study spaces and is technology driven. The campus offers degrees in Business, Finance, Management, and Professional Health Studies along with foundation and English language courses.

  • Sports Facilities

The University of the West of Scotland offers academic courses in sports science and has sports amenities set up to facilitate this. UWS encourages students to join sports recreationally, play competitively within the sports clubs or participate in competitive sports nationally and internationally. A range of individual and team sports, both indoor and outdoor, are available at the University. Besides their campus facilities, The University of the West of Scotland  partners with local clubs in the community to widen access to new sports. UWS teams include basketball, football, cricket, netball, badminton, climbing, hockey, golf, archery, cheerleading, judo, snow sports, swimming, rugby, etc.

The University of the West of Scotland has libraries at every campus with an extensive and impressive collection of books, journals, e-resources and archives. The Libraries are connected through the UWS Library Network which students can access online. The Library also conducts an ‘Information Literacy Programme’ for students as part of skills development.

  • Students’ Union and Student Life

The University of the West of Scotland’s Students’ Union is called the SAUWS (Students Association UWS). At all campuses the active Students’ Union hosts events like live music, theme parties and social meets. They run campaigns, help set up and joining of societies and clubs and offer advice to members. The Union runs on-campus diners, bars, shops and game rooms too.

Accommodation on Campus at the UWS

The University of the West of Scotland provides student accommodation at its many halls of residence at its campuses. The Ayr campus has contemporary en-suite and studio flats. Paisley residences feature furnished flats located next to the library. Accommodation at Dumfries is arranged along with the University of Glasgow at the Crichton. The rooms come fully furnished, self-catered and range from en-suite, studio to standard flats. Rent is inclusive of utilities and insurance. Services provided include laundry, cleaning, Wi-Fi and 24 hour security.

Scholarship Programmes: University of the West of Scotland

Through The University of the West of Scotland’s Global Scholarships international students can avail funding for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. This scholarship is applied for the first year of the course only. They also accept other international scholarships on special grounds, provided the applicant can prove academic excellence. Additionally, the Scottish Government offers Scotland Saltire Scholarships to 1 year full time Master’s courses in certain disciplines.   • Gavin Hastings, rugby player

Andrew Gavin Hastings, OBE is a famous former Scottish rugby union player. A fullback, he is regarded to be one of the finest ever Scottish rugby players. He was regarded as one of the outstanding players of his generation, he won 61 caps for Scotland, and 20 of that as captain.

  • Shamshad Akhtar, economist and diplomat

 Shamshad Akhtar holds a PhD in Economics in 1980 from the University of the West of Scotland. She is a Pakistani development economist and a diplomat. She served as the caretaker Finance Minister of Pakistan. Shamshad held position as a senior adviser to the Secretary-General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon and was also the Vice-President of the World Bank.

  • Callum Hawkins, sportsperson

Callum Hawkins  studied mechanical engineering from UWS. He is a British distance runner, who competed in the marathon during the 2016 Summer Olympics. He is a Scottish record holder in the marathon and also the British all-time number three. Hawkins is impressively the all-time Great Britain number two for the half marathon.

  • Rana Majid Haq, cricketer

Rana Majid Haq popularly known as Majid Haq, is a seasoned Scottish cricketer. Majid graduated in Accountancy and obtained his honours degree from the University of the West of Scotland. He is a left-handed batsman and talented off spin bowler. He was a member of the Scottish squad during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

  • Willie Rennie

William Cowan Rennie is a Scottish politician serving as a Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats since the year 2011. Willie holds a B.Sc. degree in Biology from the University of West of Scotland.

  • Erin Jacqueline Cuthbert, footballer

Erin Jacqueline Cuthbert is a famous Scottish footballer, she plays for Chelsea in the FA WSL. Erin is a member of the Scotland national team. She was chosen in the Scotland squad for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 as well as 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup final tournaments. During the 2019 World Cup, Erin scored for Scotland in a 3–3 draw with Argentina.

Denzil Meyrick is a Scottish bestselling novelist. Prior to this he served as a police officer with Strathclyde Police. Since 2012, Denzil Meyrick began writing Scottish crime fiction novels.

  • David Henderson, news correspondent

David Henderson is a news correspondent and a presenter with BBC Scotland news. He holds a postgraduate diploma in journalism from UWS. David is a business correspondent with BBC Scotland. He is remembered as a presenter for BBC Reporting Scotland,  Newsnight Scotland, The Politics Show Scotland, Good Morning Scotland, Newsdrive, Scotland at 10 and Holyrood Live.
