About the University of Derby

The University of Derby, is a public academic and research university located in Derby, England, UK, formerly Derby College, and became a university in 1992. The institute has a rich, centuries-old history that started out as a training institution for schoolmistresses in 1851. Today, it is one among the top 30 universities in the UK. Campus and facilities at the University of Derby

Derby Campus has four sites: Kedleston Road, Markeaton Street, Britannia Mill, and One Friar Gate Square. Kedleston Road is the main site. Unibuses ferry students across the campus. It features a Sports Centre, Main Library, student bars, cafes and shops. The Derby theatre is owned by the UOD. Markeaton Street houses the English Computing Mathematics, Arts and Media centres. They have a recording studio, media studios, digital darkrooms and print bureau, in addition to classrooms, a library and offices. Britannia Mill campus offers Fine Arts, Dance and Printing, etc. The One Friar Gate campus features the Law, Social Sciences, Politics, Policing, and Criminology Centres.

Buxton Campus is notable for the magnificent and historic Devonshire Dome. It houses the UOD courses like Tourism, Natural Science and Wellness. It has a famous student-run, award-winning spa, hair and beauty salon as part of the Spa and Wellness management department. It also has a prize-winning restaurant run by students studying Culinary Arts. Chesterfield Campus is associated with the Nursing courses and even has a mock NHS model hospital set-up to train students.

Sports Facilities

The University of Derby has a Sports Centre on campus where students can train and practice either social or competitive sports. They have a fully equipped gym, various sports studios, climbing walls, courts and arenas as well as 3G/4G pitches. The sports clubs feature Basketball, Rugby, Football, Cycling, Climbing, Badminton, Squash, Tennis, Tai-chi, Pilates, Yoga, Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Jujitsu, Cricket, Dodgeball, Equine sports, Hockey, Golf, etc. UOD offers sports Scholarships too.

Students’ Union and Student Life

‘Union of Students’ is the official The University of Derby student union group. Its main event space and bar is called The Academy. Students automatically gain membership on admission. The Union represents students at the university level and work to advise, assist and support students, arrange campaigns and acts as a voice for all members. They conduct all-year events and help students join several clubs and societies.

Study Facilities

At all on-campus libraries students can access a vast collection of academic resources comprising of books, e-books, journals, publications, etc. Study spaces are available in the library to facilitate individual or group study. The University of Derby has set up online access to the library too.

Scholarship Programmes for the University of Derby

The University of Derby assists with scholarships, bursaries and grants depending on an applicant’s circumstances, place of living and choice of course.  Grant of £5000 is provided for pre-registration of courses in Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Radiography. Certain courses come with an option to do one year in industry which may give these students financial support. Non-EU international students can apply for scholarships and bursaries each year, including the Excellent International Student Scholarship.   • Graham Joyce, writer

After receiving a BEd degree from Bishop Lonsdale College in 1977 (now University of Derby). Graham Joyce (22 October 1954 – 9 September 2014) was a British writer of speculative fiction and the recipient of numerous awards, including the O. Henry Award and the World Fantasy Award, for both his novels and short stories.

  • Lucy Honour Ruby Spraggan, singer-songwriter

Lucy Honour Ruby Spraggan (born 21 July 1991) is an English singer-songwriter. She auditioned for The X Factor in 2012, performing her own composition, “Last Night”.[1] On 3 November 2012, it was announced she would be quitting her run on The X Factor due to illness, so she subsequently finished in ninth place, and second in her category. Following the show Spraggan was signed to Columbia Records.

  • Devon Eugene Malcolm, cricketer

Devon Eugene Malcolm is a former English cricketer who played in 40 Test matches for England. He was said to be one of the fastest bowlers in his time in international cricket.

  • David Imms, artist

David Imms is a well known English artist and painter. Imms studied at Derby College of Art between 1962 to 1964. His work is widely represented in a number of private and public collections including the famous Victoria and Albert Museum as well as the University of London. Some of his works are displayed at Queen Mary College London and Derby Museum as well as at the Art Gallery and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

Idris Khan graduated with a specialisation in photography from the University of Derby in the year 2001. Idris is a British whose work draws inspiration from a diverse range of cultural sources. Some of his influences include literature, music, religion, history and art.

  • Khumbo Hasting Kachali, politician

Khumbo Hasting Kachali is a Malawian politician, he held position as the Vice President of Malawi from the year 2012 to 2014. He received his Masters in Science Degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby. Khumbo is credited with being the first ever Vice President coming from the Northern Region of Malawi.

  • Paul Cummins

Paul Cummins is an English artist originally from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He produces landscape installations with the use of ceramic flowers. Cummins studied ceramics at the University of Derby’s College of Arts. He was one of the artists with disabilities who was commissioned by the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The UK Arts Councils and the British Council got him to produce works for Unlimited, which is a programme celebrating disabled artists’ work prior to the London 2012 Olympics.
