Overview


Durham University was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and later incorporated by royal charter in 1837. It is considered to be the third oldest university in England and first recognised university to open in England for more than 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge. It has 17 colleges and the teaching departments are spread across four faculties which include Science; Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences and Health, and the Business School. Nearly 92 percent of the students from Durham University regularly take part in sports. Alumni from the university have made notable contributions in society and various fields including the government, law, science, business, and athletics, amongst others. The university has won many accolades for its research, teaching and other activities, recently in 2020 Durham University Student Volunteering and Outreach bagged the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
